When most people call to ask about tent rentals, they say something like: “I need a tent for my event.”
That’s a fine place to start. But what they usually don’t know, until we talk them through it, is that there are three meaningfully different types of tents, and the wrong one for your event isn’t just a style issue. It can affect your layout, your guest count, what surface the tent can go on, and whether the whole setup actually works for your space.
Here’s something that surprises a lot of customers: what most people loosely call a “pole tent” actually covers two very different products, a tension tent designed for weddings and large events, and a canopy tent built for smaller, shorter-term gatherings. They look different, install differently, cost differently, and are right for completely different occasions. Knowing which one you actually need changes the conversation significantly.
This guide breaks down all three tent types, tension tents, frame tents, and canopy tents, so you can walk into the planning process with a clear picture of what fits your event.
Tension Tents: The Substantial Event Tent
When most people picture a large outdoor wedding or a formal event under a tent, they’re picturing a tension tent. This is our most substantial tent option, a structure with a vinyl top stretched under tension between tall center poles, anchored to the ground with heavy-duty 42″ stakes. That tension is what gives the tent its taut, polished appearance and what allows it to hold up through real Wisconsin weather.
The result is a tent with high, sweeping peaks that arch dramatically upward from the center. The white vinyl interior is bright and soft, and from the moment guests arrive, a well-installed tension tent signals that something special is happening here. These tents photograph beautifully and create real ambiance before a single table is set or decoration goes up.
These are also serious installations. A large tension tent requires a sizable crew and several hours to set up correctly. That’s not a complication, it’s a reflection of what you’re getting: a beautiful, heavy-duty structure built to anchor your event.
A word on center poles:
Yes, tension tents have center poles. For customers who haven’t worked with them before, this is usually less of an issue than they expect. Our team works with you ahead of time to plan the layout around the pole locations; tables, the dance floor, bars, and other elements are all placed with the poles in mind from the start. The poles can also become part of the design, wrapped with lights, draped with fabric, or incorporated into floral arrangements. By the time the event is set up, most customers find the poles are barely noticeable, or have become one of the more interesting design elements in the room.
Tension tents are the right call for: Outdoor weddings and receptions, large anniversary or milestone celebrations, corporate galas, fundraiser dinners, and any event where the tent itself should feel like part of the venue. They require ground conditions that allow for secure staking, along with enough space for the full installation footprint.
Frame Tents: The Open-Interior Option for Specific Situations
A frame tent is built on a freestanding aluminum or steel framework, with the vinyl top stretched over it. Because the frame carries the structural load, there are no center poles, the entire interior is open from floor to ceiling.
That open interior is genuinely useful in certain situations. Without poles, the layout is a completely blank canvas. Tables, a dance floor, bar setups, and staging can all go exactly where they need to go without working around anything.
Frame tents also solve a specific site problem. Because they don’t depend solely on deep ground staking, they can work in situations where a tension tent’s 42″ stakes aren’t feasible, spanning part of a driveway, extending coverage adjacent to a garage or barn, or creating coverage over an area where ground conditions make full staking difficult. Depending on the surface, frame tents can be staked, weighted, or secured with a combination of both. That said, every site is different and we evaluate each one individually, not every hard or paved surface is automatically a good fit, and we’ll be straightforward if a location gives us concern.
One thing worth understanding: frame tents look noticeably different from tension tents on the inside. Where a tension tent has a soft, sweeping white vinyl interior with high dramatic peaks, a frame tent has visible metal framework running across the ceiling and much straighter, more angular lines. Neither look is better, they serve different aesthetics, and which one fits depends as much on the feel of your event as on the site conditions.
Frame tents are also generally more expensive to rent and take longer to install than a comparable tension tent. They’re the right answer when the site or layout calls for them. When they’re not necessary, a tension tent almost always serves the event better.
Frame tents make the most sense for: Hard-surface or unique-layout situations we evaluate on a case-by-case basis, spanning a driveway, extending coverage near a structure, or events where a fully open interior is the priority and site conditions require a different anchoring approach.
Canopy Tents: The Practical Option for Smaller Events
Canopy tents are also pole-supported, which is where the confusion with tension tents comes in. But they are a very different product. Canopy tents use lighter-weight materials, a thinner vinyl top, and smaller 24″ stakes, and they install in 30 to 60 minutes rather than the several hours a large tension tent requires. That faster setup is reflected in a more accessible price point, which makes canopy tents the natural fit for events where practical, affordable coverage is what the occasion calls for.
For most events under roughly 100 guests, depending on the layout and what else needs to go inside the tent, a canopy tent is often the most sensible choice. All of our canopy tents are white, which means they blend cleanly with almost any event style or color palette without any additional effort.
Canopy tents are also our most flexible option when it comes to delivery. Many are available for customer pickup and self-installation, we provide setup instructions and a how-to video so you’re not figuring it out alone on the day of the event. Or we can deliver and install for you. That flexibility is something you won’t find with our larger tension tents.
A few honest things to know: canopy tents are not designed for the same conditions as tension tents. They handle typical event weather well, but they’re not built for significant wind or serious weather situations. If your event date has a forecast worth planning around, that’s a conversation to have with us before booking. Canopy tents also require ground conditions suitable for secure staking, their smaller 24″ stakes are not designed for saturated or compromised ground, so site conditions are worth discussing with us before booking.
One more thing we tell every customer regardless of which tent they’re considering: go a size larger than you think you need. Tables, chairs, a food station, a gift table, a cake table, it all adds up quickly once you’re actually laying out the event. A tent with a little extra room feels comfortable and intentional. A tent that’s too small is a problem that’s very hard to solve the morning of the event.
Canopy tents are the right call for: Backyard birthday parties, graduation open houses, anniversary gatherings, church functions, company picnics, smaller community events, and any one-day event where practical coverage at a reasonable price point is the priority.

A canopy tent is usually the right starting point. For birthday parties, anniversaries, family get-togethers, or casual gatherings under roughly 75 to 100 guests, a canopy tent gives you everything you need. Remember to go a size larger than you think, it’s much easier to fill extra space than to work around a tent that’s too small once the tables and food setup are actually in place.
